Leslie Coles
Admiral

Leslie’s story is one of transformation and adaptation. With no prior maritime experience, she took on the challenge of life aboard the Nordhavn 62, Kariwa, and quickly became an integral part of the crew.

On board, Leslie takes care of all domestic matters, including engine checks, managing mooring lines, fenders, and the anchor. While she does get seasick at the start of each journey, Leslie has fully embraced the challenges of life at sea, taking on responsibilities with great enthusiasm and learning everything she can about the intricacies of life aboard a boat.

Before transitioning to this new lifestyle, Leslie had a successful career as a computer programmer. After retiring in 2014, she and Frank reunited and began a whirlwind of international travel. They lived in places like Grand Cayman, Antibes, and the USA, and spent over two years in Hong Kong.

During their time in Hong Kong, Leslie frequently flew back and forth every six weeks to meet Frank due to her “green card obligations.” This period of travel provided Leslie with a global perspective, which she now brings to their journey at sea.

When COVID-19 made international travel more difficult, Frank decided to retire and return to the USA, sparking the decision to live aboard a boat. After considering both a boat and an RV, they chose the Nordhavn 62, Kariwa, and embarked on their new life at sea.

Leslie’s role aboard the boat has been a steep learning curve, but her hands-on approach and willingness to adapt have made her an essential part of the crew. Living aboard Kariwa is very different from their previous experience with the Lagoon 46 catamaran in Hong Kong, but Leslie is thriving in her new environment.

Together, Frank and Leslie continue to embrace the challenges and rewards of cruising the seas, documenting their journey through blogs, videos, and social media, and inspiring others to consider life at sea.
